FAQ
Billing & insurance questions, answered
What is medical billing automation?
Medical billing automation is software that runs the administrative work around billing and insurance: it checks coverage before the visit, collects and routes prior authorization documents, tracks claim and payment events across systems, alerts your team to exceptions, and keeps patients informed from confirmed balances. Keragon does this across the systems you already use, with 300+ HIPAA-compliant integrations and AI teammates that handle the follow-up. It is not a clearinghouse or a billing service: your billing system stays the system of record.
What is automated insurance eligibility verification?
Automated insurance eligibility verification is a workflow that checks a patient's coverage through payer-connected services before the visit, records the response, and routes problems to your team. Keragon runs these checks through supported tools like pVerify, Availity, Stedi and Nirvana, on a schedule or for the whole week's calendar at once, and writes the result where your team works. The response is a point-in-time status, so anything ambiguous goes to a person, not to a guess.
Can Keragon verify the whole week's schedule in batches?
Yes. A recurring workflow pulls the upcoming schedule from your EHR or PM system, runs an eligibility check for each visit through your connected verification service, files each response, and opens tickets only for the exceptions. Your team reviews a short exception list instead of checking every patient by hand.
Is real-time insurance verification actually real time?
When a check runs through an eligibility API like pVerify or Availity, the payer responds in seconds, so the check itself is real time. What Keragon adds is everything around it: triggering the check at booking or before the visit, recording the response with its timestamp, and routing failures. Where a system only supports scheduled polling, we say so, and the workflow runs on a cadence instead.
Is Keragon billing software or a billing service?
Neither. Keragon is the automation layer that runs across the billing tools and people you already have. Your EHR or practice management system stays the financial system of record, your clearinghouse keeps moving the claims, and your billers keep the judgment calls. Keragon automates the handoffs between them and routes exceptions to the right owner.
Does Keragon replace my EHR, my clearinghouse or my biller?
No. It connects them. Claims still live in your billing system and still travel through your clearinghouse. Keragon moves approved data and tasks around those systems: eligibility results to the chart, prior-auth documents to the right folder, payment events to your CRM, and exceptions to a queue with an owner and a deadline. The current integration list is at keragon.com/all-integrations.
Can it check insurance eligibility and benefits?
Yes. Keragon runs supported eligibility checks through tools like pVerify, Availity, Stedi and Nirvana days before the visit, records the response and its timestamp, and routes exceptions to your team. An eligibility response is a status at a point in time, not a coverage or payment guarantee, so benefits questions follow your review policy.
Can it automate prior authorization?
It automates the workflow around prior authorization: detecting that an authorization is needed, collecting and filing documents, creating supported requests, watching status and escalating what stalls. Medical-necessity decisions stay with clinicians and payers. Keragon never makes them.
Can it submit claims or post payments?
Through supported connectors, yes, with controls. athenahealth exposes claim creation, Availity exposes claim and service-review actions, and AdvancedMD can apply a payment to a charge. Availability depends on your exact system and permissions, and consequential writes run with validation and an approval step, verified against your account before going live.
Will it eliminate denials?
No tool can promise that, and some denials are the payer's error rather than yours. What automation does: catches missing or inconsistent data before it becomes a claim, routes rejections and denials to an owner with the payer response attached, tracks deadlines, and shows the recurring root causes so you can fix the process instead of the same claim.
Is it HIPAA-compliant to automate billing workflows?
Yes, when every link in the chain is covered by a BAA, including the automation layer itself. Keragon is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2 Type II audited, data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and a BAA is included on every paid plan. General-purpose tools like Zapier don't offer a BAA, so patient data in them is a compliance risk. Every action is written to an audit log your team can review.
Can we take patient payments without expanding our compliance risk?
Yes, with the right architecture. Stripe and Square don't sign BAAs, so Keragon workflows keep PHI out of the payment processor: the processor moves tokenized payments, the medical context stays in your BAA-covered systems, and the two are joined by an opaque ID. Card handling also carries its own PCI obligations, which are separate from HIPAA.
What happens when a workflow hits something it can't decide?
It stops and routes. An unmatched payment, an ambiguous eligibility response or an unusual amount becomes an exception with the evidence attached, an owner and a deadline. Consequential actions like posting an adjustment or refunding a payment wait for the role you authorize. Nothing consequential happens silently.
